Start With a Budget Built Around Your Goals

A small business should determine its Google Ads budget based on the number of leads or sales it wants to generate not simply choose an arbitrary monthly number. For example, imagine your target is 30 qualified leads per month and your expected cost per lead is $75. Generating those leads would require approximately $2,250 in monthly advertising spend. If your average customer is worth several thousand dollars, that investment could make sense. If your average customer is worth $100, the economics would be completely different. This is why Google Ads budgeting should start with your business model. Consider your average customer value, target number of customers, lead-to-customer conversion rate, acceptable cost per acquisition, and profit margin. From there, you can work backward to determine an advertising budget that supports your growth goals.

For many small businesses, a starting Google Ads budget might fall somewhere around $1,500–$5,000 per month, but this should be treated as a planning range rather than a universal benchmark. Competitive industries such as legal services, healthcare, dental services, home services, and financial services can require substantially more because advertisers are competing for valuable searches. Your geographic market matters too. Advertising in a smaller local market is very different from competing across New York City, New Jersey, Los Angeles, or an entire state. The goal is to give the campaign enough budget to collect meaningful data while maintaining control over how much you’re willing to pay to acquire a customer.

What Determines Your Google Ads Cost?

Several factors determine how much you’ll ultimately pay. Keyword competition. Google Ads operates through an auction. When many businesses want to advertise for the same high-value searches, costs can increase. Location. Competition varies dramatically between geographic markets. A campaign targeting one town may have completely different economics from a campaign targeting an entire metropolitan area. Industry. A click isn’t equally valuable in every industry. Businesses where one new client can be worth thousands of dollars are often willing to pay substantially more for qualified traffic. Quality and relevance. Spending more doesn’t automatically mean getting better results. Your keywords, ad copy, targeting, landing page, offer, and conversion tracking all affect campaign performance. Conversion rate. This is one of the most important numbers. If 100 clicks generate two leads for one business and ten leads for another, those businesses can experience dramatically different costs per lead—even with similar traffic costs.

Don’t Judge Google Ads by Cost Per Click Alone A $10 click isn’t necessarily expensive. Imagine Business A pays $5 per click but receives mostly unqualified traffic. Business B pays $10 per click, but those searches come from people actively looking for its service. Business B could ultimately have the more profitable campaign. That’s why Media Click focuses on metrics further down the funnel, including qualified leads, cost per lead, conversion rate, customer acquisition cost, and return on advertising spend. Traffic is useful only when it contributes to a business objective. Are Your Google Ads Actually Working? Clicks and traffic only tell part of the story.
